these grymoires contain secrets of thaumaturgy that were written in Elder Tongue, a lost derivative of cuneiform Akkadian and Sumerian writing systems. it is said that the Elder Tongue was gifted to Meshkiangasher, son of Utu by the god of magyk Enki a few centuries before the tower of Babel fell. legend says the elder mages destroyed any traces of it that remained after Enmerka, the last of the first kings, died in order to keep it secret and prevent Gilgamesh from learning it.
whispers of two small tablets and a single cylinder seal were discovered among the ancient ruins of Uruk in 1853 when the city was excavated by William Kennett Loftus. these particular artifacts had an arcane script differing from all of the other artifacts recovered. those fragments were stolen 6 years later by an Ottoman smuggler, who kept them hidden in a vault under the Hagia Sofia by order of Sultan Abdul Hamid II. in 1905, they mysteriously vanished. forever to remain just that...whispers.
during my brief stay in Istanbul, i met the last living descendent of the Sultan Mehmed the VI, who told me that the artifacts were destroyed by a Persian mystik in the holy ฤtar, as were the first tablets all those years ago.
according to extensive records passed down to me by my father and his father before him, this particular mage was killed in 1916 during the Great War. the secrets he obtained from those tablets may have died with him.
